A Girls’ Generation Joke Just Became a Real Subunit
Hyoyeon, Yuri and Sooyoung are officially debuting as Girls’ Generation-HRS — turning what began as a comedy sketch into an actual K-pop release.
Sometimes the best ideas aren’t part of a carefully planned rollout.
Girls’ Generation members Hyoyeon, Yuri and Sooyoung are preparing to officially debut as Girls’ Generation-HRS, a new three-member unit whose origins are considerably less conventional than the usual K-pop launch.
The project began through content on Hyoyeon’s personal YouTube channel, Hyoyeon’s Level Up, where the idea of forming another Girls’ Generation unit was initially played for comedy.
Somewhere along the way, the joke stopped being a joke.
HRS is now preparing to release its first digital single, “Skibidi,” on August 31 at 6 p.m. KST. The two-track release will include the title track alongside the B-side “Lowkey In Love.”
And yes, the title really is “Skibidi.”
According to SM Entertainment, the title track begins in house territory before transitioning into hip-hop, carrying a message about forging a new path together.
The group has already taken its first steps onto an actual stage. HRS performed ahead of the single’s official release at the 2026 CassCool Festival on August 22, and the promotional rollout continued on August 26 with the arrival of the unit’s first teaser images.
For Girls’ Generation, the significance goes beyond another digital single.
The group debuted in 2007 and became one of the defining acts of K-pop’s second generation, building a catalog that includes songs such as “Into the New World,” “Gee,” “Genie” and “I Got a Boy.” Nearly two decades later, the creation of an entirely new configuration of members is another reminder of the unusual longevity of the Girls’ Generation name.
HRS also joins an existing history of Girls’ Generation units. Taeyeon, Tiffany and Seohyun previously promoted as Girls’ Generation-TTS, while Taeyeon, Sunny, Hyoyeon, Yuri and Yoona formed Girls’ Generation-Oh!GG.
This time, however, the route to a new unit feels decidedly less formal.
What started as three longtime members having fun with the idea on YouTube has made the jump from variety content to real performances, real teasers and, on August 31, real music.
Nineteen years after Girls’ Generation first arrived, apparently there are still new combinations left to discover.
