Minzy Returns to Solo Music After Nearly Five Years With ‘CALLING’

Minzy is back with solo music for the first time in four years and nine months.

The 2NE1 member released her new single “CALLING” on September 28, marking her first solo comeback since 2021.

The three-track release includes Korean and English versions of the title track alongside the B-side “We Almost Were.”

Built around soulful R&B and a full choir, “CALLING” follows the process of confronting a version of yourself that became lost in darkness and finding the strength to rise again by following an inner calling.

Minzy took an active role behind the music as well, participating in the project’s production, lyrics and composition.

That message also carries into the performance. The choreography incorporates a sign-language gesture expressing “heard” or “I can hear it,” an intentional choice from Minzy to make the song something that could be experienced beyond sound alone.

“We Almost Were,” meanwhile, blends R&B with rock and centers on a relationship — and possibility — that came close to becoming something more but ultimately never did. DNCE guitarist JinJoo Lee also contributed guitar to the track.

The release arrives after Minzy’s recent return to full-group activities with 2NE1, but “CALLING” turns the focus back toward her individual musical identity — reopening a solo chapter that had been quiet for nearly five years.
