SOYEON has returned to solo music with “What a Wonderful Life,” her first full-length album and first solo comeback in more than five years.
Released September 7, the eight-track record follows her 2021 debut mini album “Windy” and arrives after years spent building one of K-pop’s most recognizable identities as both an artist and producer.
For her return, SOYEON has centered the album on a more personal question: what does she want her own life to look like?
The title track, “I’m gonna TOESA,” uses quitting a job as its central metaphor, pairing a band-driven sound with lyrics about walking away from an exhausting routine. Webtoon artist and television personality Kian84 contributes narration to the track.
Its workplace concept has also driven the comeback’s visual campaign. Teasers placed SOYEON inside an office environment before depicting her dramatically announcing her resignation — turning an everyday fantasy for burned-out workers into the album’s opening statement.
But “What a Wonderful Life” reaches beyond the title track.
Across eight songs, SOYEON moves through rock, hyperpop, disco and other styles while continuing the hands-on approach that has defined much of her career. She participated in writing and composing throughout the album, using the project to explore musical territory she says helped her identify the sound that fits her best.
The album includes “Bankroll,” “icebluerabbit,” “STAR,” “Hate veggie song,” “Amigo” featuring Minsu, “Would you love me” and “Goodbye, Romance.”
Its wider concept looks back on SOYEON’s twenties as she approaches a new stage of her life.
An introductory film released ahead of the album traced that history from childhood through her trainee years, “Produce 101,” i-dle’s debut and her development as a producer. SOYEON said she had postponed making a full solo album for a long time, imagining that years from now she would look back on finally making it as a romantic period in her life.
“What a Wonderful Life” turns that reflection into a record about moving forward — whether that means leaving the office, trying a different sound or simply deciding what parts of the past are worth taking into whatever comes next.
